Hiplet Ballerinas

Saturday, March 21, 2020, 3:00 AM

Hiplet (pronounced "hip-lay") is an innovative dance form that combines classical pointe technique with African, Latin, hip-hop and urban dance styles. Performances may incorporate the rhythms of African drums with the music of Tchaikovsky, arabesques and beat-boxing or even Tango en pointe--all while showcasing Hiplet's trademark sass, hip movements and struts against popular music, from Black Violin to Beyoncé. The Hiplet technique was created by decorated dance instructor Homer Bryant and taught at his studio, the Chicago Multicultural Dance Center, where he envisioned his training to be accessible to everyone. When videos of Bryant's Hiplet classes went viral on social media, they were featured on Good Morning America, Buzzfeed and The Huffington Post--and their videos have now amassed over a billion views. An incredible demand for the new art form has propelled the inaugural tour of the Hiplet Ballerinas in the 2019-20 season, inspiring audiences around the world.
